Can you visit Luxor on a day trip from Marsa Alam?

Yes, but it is the longest of the Red Sea day trips. Luxor is about 300–350 km from the Marsa Alam hotels, roughly 4.5 hours each way with rest stops, so published itineraries pick up around 03:30–04:00 and return around 20:00–20:30. Of a 16-hour day, about nine hours are spent in a vehicle and five to six at the sites.

There are also far fewer departures than from Hurghada. The platforms list only a handful of Luxor trips from Marsa Alam, against dozens from Hurghada, so check availability for your date early and keep a backup day. Two-day trips with a night in Luxor are a big share of what's on offer, and for good reason.

Marsa Alam or Port Ghalib: does the pickup point matter?

A little. Port Ghalib sits next to Marsa Alam airport, north of the town, and route planners put it at about 295 km from Luxor, 4 to 4.5 hours by car. Hotels south of Marsa Alam town add distance, and some drivers use the Edfu road while others go north via El Quseir towards Qena. Either way, the operator confirms your pickup time for your hotel's location before the trip.

If you're in one of the far-southern resorts, ask the operator for the door-to-door time before you book; the day can stretch well past 16 hours.

Is the two-day trip better?

For most people, yes. The two-day trips in the feed cost from about $348–399 and split the road into two four-hour legs. You get Karnak and Luxor Temple in the late afternoon light, a night in a Luxor hotel, and either a sunrise balloon flight or a calmer West Bank morning. Compare that with paying about $140 for one very long day: two days cost roughly two and a half times as much, but you see more and you see it awake.

The balloon is weather-dependent; with only one morning in Luxor there is no backup. Ask what is refunded if the flight is cancelled. Our balloon trips from Hurghada page goes through the same trade-off.

Booking tips for Italian and other non-English speakers

Your hotel's excursion desk sells similar trips, and the platform listings show which guide languages are offered. One local operator charges a supplement of about €30 per group for a guide in another language. If you want an Italian-speaking Egyptologist, ask before paying, and get it in writing.

Wherever you book, check three things in the listing:

  • Entry fees. At the gate, the Valley of the Kings costs EGP 750, Karnak EGP 600, Hatshepsut EGP 440 (checked 21 Oct 2026). That's about $34 at around EGP 52.8 to the dollar.
  • Tutankhamun's tomb. Usually extra, EGP 700 (about $13).
  • Lunch and drinks. Lunch is common; drinks usually aren't included.

Carry your passport or a copy — there are police checkpoints on the desert roads.

Who should do what

  • Day trip: adults with one free day who sleep well in a vehicle.
  • Two days: families, first-time visitors, anyone who wants Luxor Temple or the balloon.
  • Private transfer and a few nights in Luxor: independent travelers, or anyone joining a Nile cruise from Luxor.

Coming from the Hurghada side of the coast instead? The Hurghada to Luxor guide has many more departures and lower prices. For entry fees in detail, see Luxor tickets.

Questions travellers ask

How far is Luxor from Marsa Alam?

About 300–350 km by road depending on your hotel, and roughly 4.5 hours each way with rest stops. Drivers use either the desert road inland to Edfu and then north along the Nile, or the road via El Quseir towards Qena. Port Ghalib, beside Marsa Alam airport, is a little closer at around 295 km.

What time do Luxor excursions from Marsa Alam leave?

Early — published itineraries pick up between about 03:30 and 04:00 and arrive in Luxor around 08:30–09:30. The drive back starts mid to late afternoon, so expect to be at your hotel around 20:00–20:30. That's about 16 hours, nine of them on the road.

Is a day trip from Marsa Alam to Luxor worth it?

If Luxor is the one thing you want to see in Egypt and you have just one free day, yes. If you can give it two days, a trip with a night in Luxor is better value for your energy and adds Luxor Temple or a balloon flight. Families with young children usually prefer the two-day version.

Can I book an Italian-speaking guide?

Often, yes. Some Marsa Alam operators offer guides in languages other than English for a supplement — one lists €30 per group. Ask before booking, since it depends on guide availability on your date, and check the language shown on the platform listing.

Are entry tickets included in Marsa Alam to Luxor tours?

Some listings include the standard entry fees, others don't, and Tutankhamun's tomb is usually extra. At the gate, the Valley of the Kings costs EGP 750, Karnak EGP 600, Hatshepsut EGP 440 and Tut's tomb EGP 700 (checked 21 Oct 2026). Read the includes line carefully.

Is there a bus from Marsa Alam to Luxor?

There's no convenient direct public bus for a sightseeing trip. Route planners show multi-leg journeys from Port Ghalib via El Quseir and Safaga taking close to ten hours. For independent travel, a private transfer is the practical option, from about $136 one way on GetYourGuide, ideally with two or three nights in Luxor.
