The short answer
- Best overallYour cruise line's own Luxor excursion
Usually the priciest option, but the ship waits for its own coaches if the road is slow. On a short call, that guarantee is worth more than any saving.

Can you visit Luxor on a shore excursion from Safaga?
Yes, if your ship is in Safaga for a full day. Luxor is about 220–240 km from the port, roughly 3 to 3.5 hours each way by coach or car, and the cruise lines themselves describe it as a very long day. Holland America's own Luxor excursion from Safaga runs about 11.5 hours. Port guides suggest at least 11 hours ashore to make it work.
That leaves about five hours in Luxor — enough for the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple and Karnak at a steady pace, with lunch. It is not enough for Luxor Temple as well unless you skip the West Bank.
| Option | Price | Time | Ship waits if late? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cruise line's excursion | about $300+ (one line lists from $309) | about 11.5 h | Usually, for its own tours | Short calls, peace of mind |
| Private tour from the pier | from about $282 on GYG | about 12 h | No | Couples and families who want their own pace |
| Guided trip from the pier | from about $190 on GYG | about 12 h | No | Price-sensitive, flexible travelers |
| Overnight trip with hotel | from about $198–710 on GYG | 1.5–2 days | Only if the ship is still there | Overnight calls, passengers leaving the cruise |
Luxor trips from Safaga port
US-dollar prices come from each platform's own feed and were checked on October 21, 2026. Dates and group size change them — the booking page has the final price.
The platform listings have very few reviews so far — one has 2.9 stars from four reviews, one has none. Weigh that against the ship's own tour, and ask any private operator for a written return-time promise.
The all-aboard problem
Everything on this page comes down to one number on your daily program: the all-aboard time, usually about 30 minutes before the ship sails. Port guides say plainly that ships may wait for their own late excursions but have no duty to wait for private tours. If you miss it, you get yourself to the next port at your own cost.
Work backwards from that time:
- Allow 3.5–4 hours from the Luxor West Bank to the pier, plus re-boarding.
- Add a buffer of at least an hour for the checkpoint, traffic or a flat tire.
- Whatever is left after the outbound drive is your time at the sites.
- Meet your guide at the pier gate once the ship is cleared
- Police checkpoint on the Safaga–Qena road; permit check
- Arrive on the West Bank: Valley of the Kings
- Temple of Hatshepsut, quick stop at the Colossi of Memnon
- Lunch
- Karnak Temple
- Leave Luxor
- Back at the pier, an hour before all aboard
This is an illustration based on 3.5-hour drives, not an operator's schedule. If your call ends at 18:00 or earlier, cut the West Bank and do Karnak and Luxor Temple only, or skip Luxor.
Private tour or ship excursion?
Book through the ship if the call is under about 12 hours, if you're traveling with anyone who walks slowly, or if missing the ship would ruin the rest of the cruise. You pay more, and you ride in a large coach, but the timing risk is the ship's problem.
Book private if the call is long, you're two to four people, and you want your own guide and pace. A private car can leave the moment the gangway opens instead of waiting for a full coach to load. Ask the operator three questions in writing: what time they pick up, what time they guarantee you back at the pier, and what happens if they're late.
At the sites, the tickets cost the same either way: Valley of the Kings EGP 750, Karnak EGP 600, Hatshepsut EGP 440 (checked 21 Oct 2026), about $34 together at around EGP 52.8 to the dollar. Some listings include them, others don't.

If your ship stays overnight
If your ship overnights in Safaga, or your cruise ends there, the two-day trips make sense: a night in a Luxor hotel, both banks at a sensible pace, and on one listing a sunrise balloon flight. Check the hotel, the entry tickets and the return time against your ship's schedule before booking.

Questions travellers ask
How far is Luxor from Safaga port?
About 220–240 km by road, inland on the Safaga–Qena desert road and then south along the Nile. Coaches and private cars take roughly 3 to 3.5 hours each way, a little more if the checkpoint is slow. Hurghada, by comparison, is only about 60 km north of Safaga.
Will the ship wait if my private Luxor tour is late?
Don't count on it. Port guides are clear that ships may hold for their own excursions but have no obligation to wait for passengers on private tours. If you miss the all-aboard time, you pay to reach the next port yourself. That's the main reason many passengers book through the ship.
How much is a Luxor shore excursion from Safaga?
A cruise line's own Luxor tour can cost about $300 or more — Holland America lists one from $309. On GetYourGuide, a private West Bank and Karnak day tour from the port starts at about $282 and a guided trip at about $190. Check whether entry tickets and lunch are included.
Can I take a taxi from Safaga port to Luxor?
Not reliably. Taxis at the pier gate are scarce, and tourist vehicles need a police travel permit for the Safaga–Qena road, which a licensed operator arranges in advance with your passport details. Port guides report negotiated round-trip fares of about $100–150, but without a permit you risk being turned back.
Is there a police convoy from Safaga to Luxor?
Recent port guides describe permit checks at the Safaga checkpoint and escorted departures at set times; other recent reports mention only document checks. We could not find an official statement. Either way, your operator handles it, and it's a reason to leave as soon as the ship is cleared.
What should I see in Luxor on a shore day?
With about five hours, pick one bank and a half. The usual shore circuit is the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple and Karnak. Some ship tours stay on the East Bank with Karnak and Luxor Temple, which saves the river crossing and is gentler for slow walkers.
