Which Luxor balloon ride should you book?

Every hot air balloon ride in Luxor follows the same script: a pre-dawn pickup, a motorboat across the Nile, a short drive to the launch field on the West Bank and a sunrise flight over the temples. What changes from one listing to the next is the basket, the time in the air and who is flying it.

Flight type Price on the platforms Time in the air People per basket Pickup Best for
Standard shared from about $63 (Headout), $70 (GYG) 30–45 min up to about 28, in compartments included First flight, tight budget
Most-reviewed standard from about $88 (GYG) about 45 min large shared basket included Peace of mind on reviews
Deluxe / comfort from about $96–116 up to 60 min about 20 or fewer included Photographers, more room
Private balloon from about $400 (GYG) 45–60 min just your group included Proposals, anniversaries

Standard baskets are divided into compartments of two to five people, so even a full balloon doesn't feel like a crowd — but the rail space is shared. The "deluxe" label is not regulated; it usually means fewer passengers and a longer flight, and it's worth checking both in the listing.

What a balloon morning looks like

Times move with the season: sunrise in Luxor ranges from about 5:20 a.m. in late April to about 6:55 a.m. in late October, and pickups are set around it. The operator confirms your time the evening before.

A typical Luxor balloon morning (winter)
  1. Hotel or cruise-boat pickup on the East Bank (times shift by about an hour across the year)
  2. Motorboat across the Nile, usually with tea, coffee and a snack on board
  3. Minibus to the launch field; safety briefing while the crews inflate the envelopes
  4. Lift-off around sunrise, often with dozens of balloons in the air at once
  5. Landing in the fields or desert edge after 30–60 minutes; ground crew packs up
  6. Certificate, photos and the drive back to the river
  7. Back at the hotel, in time for breakfast and a West Bank tour

If you want to see the tombs the same day, a West Bank tour fits neatly after landing — or book one of the balloon-plus-tour combos, which time the pickup for you.

Is a hot air balloon ride in Luxor safe?

The honest answer: Luxor flies a lot of balloons, and it has had serious accidents. On 26 February 2013 a balloon caught fire as it came in to land, after a leak in the fuel line, and 19 of the 21 people on board died — the deadliest balloon accident on record. On 5 January 2018 strong winds pushed a balloon off course and one tourist died in the hard landing.

After 2013 flights stopped for about two months. When they resumed, a technical team from the civil aviation ministry was sent to monitor operators' checks and an aviation engineer reviews each balloon before and after take-off. AP reported in 2018 that flights are watched by cameras and capped at 2,000 meters.

Today the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority grounds the whole fleet when conditions are poor — it cancelled West Bank flights for strong morning winds in March 2026 — and it suspended all Luxor balloon flights from 1 June to 31 August 2026 because of summer heat and unstable air. Flights resumed in September.

Standard, deluxe or private basket?

Standard is the classic Luxor flight: a large balloon carrying up to about 28 passengers in compartments, 30–45 minutes in the air. Deluxe or comfort baskets cap the numbers — Sindbad, for example, sells its comfort flight with a maximum of 20 — and usually stay up longer. Private means the whole basket is yours, from a small two-person balloon upwards; on the platforms that starts at about $400, and operators quote larger private balloons on request.

For most people a standard flight is enough. Pay for deluxe if photos matter or if you'd rather not jostle for the rail. Our operators overview covers who actually flies the balloons sold on each platform.

Questions travellers ask

How much is a hot air balloon ride in Luxor?

Shared sunrise flights with hotel pickup start at about $63 on Headout and about $70 on GetYourGuide; the most-reviewed flight is about $88. Deluxe baskets run about $96–116, and a private balloon for two is listed from about $400. Our price guide breaks down what drives the difference.

Is a hot air balloon ride in Luxor safe?

Luxor has had serious accidents — 19 people died in 2013 and one in 2018 — and flights are now inspected and grounded by the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority when the wind is too strong. On a normal winter morning dozens of balloons fly without incident, but this is aviation in a busy sky. Choose an established operator and accept a weather cancellation without argument.

What time do Luxor balloon rides start?

Pickup is usually between about 4:00 and 5:30 a.m., depending on the month, with take-off around sunrise. Sunrise in Luxor ranges from about 5:20 a.m. in late April to about 6:55 a.m. in late October. The operator confirms your exact pickup time the evening before; you're back at the hotel by about 8:00–8:30.

How long is the balloon flight in Luxor?

The time in the air is usually 30 to 60 minutes, decided on the day by wind and temperature. Standard baskets tend toward the shorter end; deluxe and private flights often advertise up to 60 minutes. The whole outing — pickup, crossing, inflation, flight, landing and return — takes about three hours.

What do you see from a Luxor balloon?

The flight drifts over the West Bank — the Colossi of Memnon, Medinet Habu, the Ramesseum and the terraces of Hatshepsut's temple, with the Theban hills and the Valley of the Kings behind and the Nile and Karnak to the east. The exact route depends on the wind, so no operator can promise a particular monument.

Can you do a balloon ride from Hurghada?

Yes, but it means leaving Hurghada around 11 p.m. and driving through the night to reach Luxor before sunrise. One-day balloon trips from Hurghada start at about $210. A two-day trip with a hotel night is often only slightly more and much kinder — see our Hurghada balloon guide.
