What kind of Luxor holiday package do you need?

Luxor holiday packages come in three shapes: a short break in Luxor itself, a two-day trip from the Red Sea with a night in Luxor, and a multi-day Egypt tour that links Cairo, Luxor and Aswan by plane and Nile cruise. The table lines up the ones on the platforms by what's in the price.

What's included — and what to check

The listings use "all-inclusive" loosely. Before comparing totals, look for these lines in each itinerary:

  • Entry tickets. Included on some, extra on others. Tutankhamun's tomb and Abu Simbel are the expensive ones; our tickets guide has the official prices.
  • Domestic flights. The Cairo-based packages that include flights save you booking Cairo–Luxor or Aswan–Abu Simbel yourself. Check the baggage allowance.
  • Cruise standard. "5-star" on the Nile covers a wide range. Ask for the ship's name and look it up — see our Nile cruise guide.
  • Meals. Check whether cruise nights are full board and which city days include lunch.
  • Balloon flight. Included on several packages. If it's cancelled for wind, ask whether you get a refund or another morning.
  • Private or shared. Private means your own guide and vehicle on land; ask whether guided temple visits from the cruise are private too.
  • Tips. Usually not included. Ask the operator what's customary for guides, drivers and cruise crew.

When a package beats DIY

A package earns its price when the parts have to connect:

  • Cairo, Luxor and Aswan in under a week. Flights, a cruise that starts on a fixed day and Abu Simbel all need to line up. One operator handling the chain means one person to call when a flight moves.
  • A first trip to Egypt. Airport pickups, a guide at every site and arranged meals make the first days easier, especially with children.
  • From the Red Sea. Two-day trips solve the hardest part — four to five hours each way by road — and add a night so the balloon flight and the West Bank don't need a 3 a.m. start.

DIY wins when you stay in one place. For a Luxor-only break, book a hotel, then pick a private day tour or a shared full-day tour of both banks on the platforms; add a balloon flight and a day trip if you have time. Two private days on the platforms plus entry tickets come to roughly the same as the two-day package, before the hotel — and you choose where you sleep.

Cairo–Luxor–Aswan: the classic route

The multi-day tours compared here start in Cairo, fly south — about an hour to Luxor — and join a Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan. The cruise stops at temples such as Edfu and Kom Ombo on the way; Abu Simbel is added by road or air from Aswan. If you'd rather piece it together, the building blocks are on this site: getting from Cairo to Luxor, cruises between Aswan and Luxor and day trips from Luxor.

Local operators and DMCs

Platforms aren't the only way to buy an Egypt package. Egypt-based tour operators, often called destination management companies (DMCs), sell tailor-made itineraries that you agree by email before paying. Memphis Tours, for example, says it was established in 1955 and sells custom and multi-country tours as well as Egypt trips. We review several operators, with what we could and couldn't verify, in our Luxor tour operators section — including Memphis Tours and Bastet Travel.

When comparing a DMC quote with a platform package, ask for the same things: hotel and ship names, which tickets are included, the deposit and cancellation terms, and who to contact on the ground. We earn a commission only on bookings made through GetYourGuide, Headout or Tiqets, not on direct bookings with operators.

Questions travellers ask

What is included in a Luxor holiday package?

Usually your guide, private or shared transport, hotel or cruise nights and the sightseeing program; the longer Egypt packages add domestic flights. Entry tickets, lunches, a balloon flight or Tutankhamun's tomb are included only when the listing says so. International flights are not part of the platform packages compared here, which start in Cairo, in Luxor or at the Red Sea resorts.

How many days do you need in Luxor?

Two full days cover the essentials — one for the West Bank tombs and temples, one for Karnak and Luxor Temple — which is exactly what the two-day packages offer. A third day adds a sunrise balloon flight or a day trip to Dendera and Abydos.

Is a package or DIY cheaper for Luxor?

For Luxor alone, DIY usually is — or at least no dearer. Two private day tours on the platforms plus entry tickets cost roughly what the two-day package does, and booking your own hotel lets you choose the price level. A package pays for itself when several moving parts must connect, such as flights from Cairo, a cruise berth and an Abu Simbel transfer.

Can I do Luxor as a short break from Hurghada or Marsa Alam?

Yes. Two-day trips from Marsa Alam with a hotel night start at about $348 and include transfers, the main sites and, on some listings, a balloon flight and felucca ride. From Hurghada, see our Hurghada guide, which compares day trips and two-day versions.

Should I book a package with a local operator or a platform?

Both work. Platforms like GetYourGuide give fixed prices, verified reviews and a standard cancellation policy. Egypt-based operators such as Memphis Tours sell tailor-made itineraries you can adjust before paying. Ask either for a written day-by-day plan with every inclusion listed, and check the cancellation terms before paying a deposit.
