How much does a private Luxor tour cost per person?

Luxor private tours cost from about $68 per person for a full day of both banks with your own Egyptologist and air-conditioned car, and from about $39 per person for a private half day. The shared equivalent — the same sites in a minibus with up to about 20 others — starts at about $30. Platform prices are quoted per person, so the useful question is what your whole group pays.

The table multiplies the cheapest "from" prices in the platform feed by group size. The booking page recalculates for your exact number of travelers, and that figure can differ, so treat this as a guide to the gap rather than a quote.

Group Shared full day ($30 pp) Private + felucca ($68 pp) Private + Tut's tomb ($80 pp) Private highlights ($105 pp)
2 people $60 $136 $160 $210
4 people $120 $272 $320 $420
6 people $180 $408 $480 $630
Extra per person vs shared — $38 $50 $75

Two things change the picture. First, entry tickets are excluded on most shared tours and on some private ones, so compare like with like — our tickets guide lists every site price. Second, a shared seat buys a fixed route; a private day buys the start time. In the Valley of the Kings that is worth a lot, because the earliest hour is the quietest.

Building a custom private itinerary

A private guide earns the money when you leave the standard route. A few shapes that work well:

  • West Bank in depth. Valley of the Kings at opening, then Medinet Habu and the Valley of the Queens instead of the shopping stop. See our West Bank guide.
  • Two short days instead of one long one. A West Bank morning on day one and Karnak and Luxor Temple in the late afternoon of day two, with a sunrise balloon in between.
  • Families with children. Fewer tombs, a felucca hour, and lunch back at the hotel. Private is the only format where you can stop when the youngest has had enough.
  • Beyond Luxor. A private car is the comfortable way to reach Dendera and Abydos, about ten hours there and back.

Put the changes in the booking message, not just in conversation on the day. If tickets are included, ask the operator to confirm that a swapped site doesn't cost extra.

What to ask before booking a private tour

Five questions save most disappointments:

  1. Is the guide an Egyptologist, and in which language? Most listings promise one; confirm the language if it isn't English.
  2. Which tickets are included — and is Tutankhamun's tomb one of them? "Entry fees" sometimes means three sites, not four.
  3. Where exactly is pickup? West Bank hotels and cruise boats are usually fine, but say so.
  4. Are there shopping stops? Alabaster and papyrus workshops are common. You can decline them in advance.
  5. What is the cancellation window? Most platform listings allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before; check the listing.

Private vs shared: when shared still wins

Shared tours make more sense when you're traveling alone, when you want the lowest price on a fixed list of headline sights, or when you enjoy the company. The Egyptologist is usually just as qualified. The cost is time: waiting at pickups, fixed stops and a guide splitting attention among a minibus of people. Our full-day tour comparison covers the shared options in detail.

Questions travellers ask

How much is a private tour in Luxor?

On the platforms, private full days of both banks start at about $68 per person, and the most-reviewed private listings sit at about $80–105. Private half days start at about $39 for Karnak and Luxor Temple and about $55 for the West Bank. Entry tickets are often extra, so check the "includes" line and our tickets guide before comparing.

Is a private tour in Luxor worth it for two people?

Usually, yes. At the cheapest rates a couple pays about $76 more in total than for two shared seats, and in return gets a fixed pickup time, no waiting for other passengers and a guide who answers only their questions. The early start alone often means shorter lines at the tomb entrances in the Valley of the Kings.

Can I choose the sites on a private Luxor tour?

Yes — that's the main reason to book one. Most private listings follow a standard route, but operators generally accept changes if you ask when booking. A customizable listing exists for people who want to plan the day from scratch. Ask in writing that changes don't add a fee, especially when tickets are included.

How do I know my Luxor tour guide is licensed?

Tour guiding in Egypt is a licensed profession under Law 121 of 1983. Guides must be Egyptian, hold a university degree and pass a Ministry of Tourism exam, and the license is personal and runs for five years. Since June 2026 the ministry has been issuing chip-based license cards that open electronic gates at sites. Ask to see the card.

Do private Luxor tours include Tutankhamun's tomb?

Only some do. Tutankhamun's tomb needs its own ticket on top of the Valley of the Kings ticket, so it's included only when the listing names it in the itinerary or the inclusions. Several private tours offer it as an optional add-on you pay for on the day.

Do private tours pick up from the West Bank or a Nile cruise boat?

Most private listings collect from Luxor hotels and moored cruise boats, but pickup areas differ between operators. Give the exact hotel or boat name when booking, and confirm the pickup time and place with the operator the day before. If you're staying in a West Bank guesthouse down a farm track, send a map pin.
