How a day trip to Luxor from Cairo works

The plane is what makes it a day. Nonstop flights from Cairo to Luxor take about an hour, and four airlines fly the route — EgyptAir, Air Cairo, Nile Air and Nesma Airlines — with the earliest departures leaving Cairo before dawn. Every packaged day trip uses the same shape: hotel pickup in Cairo or Giza, a morning flight, the West Bank before the heat, the East Bank in the afternoon and an evening flight back.

The tours in our feed are all private — your own car and Egyptologist in Luxor — because the flights make group logistics awkward. The timeline below follows the most-reviewed listing, which publishes a 06:00 pickup and about 15 hours in total; the middle times are approximate.

A typical Luxor day trip from Cairo by plane
  1. Hotel pickup in Cairo or Giza; about 30 minutes to Cairo International Airport
  2. Flight to Luxor, roughly one hour in the air
  3. Guide and car meet you at Luxor airport; drive to the West Bank
  4. Valley of the Kings, then Hatshepsut's temple and Medinet Habu
  5. Colossi of Memnon and lunch at a local restaurant
  6. Felucca ride across the Nile to the East Bank
  7. Karnak, then Luxor Temple
  8. Transfer to Luxor airport for the flight back
  9. Back at your Cairo hotel

Overnight and multi-day trips from Cairo to Luxor

One night in Luxor changes the day more than any upgrade. You can start the West Bank at opening time instead of mid-morning, add a sunrise balloon flight, and see Karnak in the softer late light without watching the clock for a flight. The two-day trip by plane and the balloon trip both work this way.

With three or four days, the classic is to fly south and sail north: the four-day package in our feed flies you from Cairo, sails from Aswan to Luxor past Kom Ombo and Edfu, and adds Abu Simbel and a balloon. Our Cairo-to-Luxor cruise guide compares that format with the longer river cruises. If you prefer rails to runways, the Cairo–Luxor train page covers the sleeper and the train-based tours.

Tour or DIY: what a Luxor day from Cairo really costs

Flights are the biggest cost, and they are easy to book yourself. The ladder below compares the packaged trip with the main DIY routes; DIY figures add return flights or train fares, a private guide-and-car day in Luxor and tickets for the Valley of the Kings, Karnak and Hatshepsut (1,790 EGP together, about $34 at roughly 52 EGP to the dollar on 21 Oct 2026).

Is a Luxor day trip from Cairo worth it?

If Luxor would otherwise be cut from your trip, yes: you see the core of both banks with a private guide, for about two hours of flying. What you give up is depth — one or two tombs instead of three or four, Karnak at speed, no evening. If your dates allow even one night, take it; if they allow two, the full-day tours of both banks bookable from a Luxor hotel cost a fraction of the by-plane packages. For airport pickups and drivers when you go DIY, see Luxor transfers.

Questions travellers ask

Can you do a day trip to Luxor from Cairo?

Yes, but only by plane. Nonstop flights take about an hour, so an early departure and an evening return leave roughly seven to eight hours on the ground — enough for the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple, Karnak and Luxor Temple at a brisk pace. Expect a 15-hour day door to door. By train or road the distance is too great for a same-day return.

How much is a day trip to Luxor from Cairo?

Packaged private day trips with flights start at about $320 on Headout and about $420–450 on GetYourGuide, usually with guide, car, lunch and entrance fees. Doing it yourself — two domestic flights, a private guide and car in Luxor, and tickets for the three main sites — comes to roughly $200–310 per person, depending on fares.

How long is the flight from Cairo to Luxor?

About an hour in the air; scheduled nonstop times run from 1 hour to about 1 hour 10 minutes. EgyptAir, Air Cairo, Nile Air and Nesma Airlines fly the route. Add the drive to Cairo International Airport and check-in time, and allow three to three and a half hours from your Cairo hotel to the Luxor arrivals hall.

Is it better to take the train or fly from Cairo to Luxor?

Fly if you have one or two days; the train takes ten hours or more each way. Take the sleeper if you have time and like the idea of waking up in Upper Egypt — it doubles as a hotel night and costs from $110 one way. Our Cairo–Luxor train guide has timetables, fares and booking.

Are entrance fees included in day trips from Cairo?

On most by-plane listings, yes — the price covers flights, car, guide, lunch and the main tickets. Tutankhamun's tomb is a separate ticket (700 EGP on our 21 Oct 2026 check) and often not mentioned at all, so ask. Our Luxor tickets guide lists what each site costs.

Can I add a hot air balloon to a Luxor trip from Cairo?

Not on a same-day trip — balloons launch around sunrise, before the first Cairo flight can land. Trips that include a balloon fly you down the afternoon before and put you in a Luxor hotel for the night. See our balloon guide for operators and prices.
