Cairo to Luxor by boat — rare, slow, and usually not what you book
A Cairo to Luxor cruise exists, but only as a two-week sailing on one ship a few times a year. Most "Cairo to Luxor cruise" packages fly you south and put you on a Luxor–Aswan boat. Here's how to tell them apart.
- Full sailing
- 14 nights, Cairo–Aswan
- Ships on the route
- 1 regular (MS Darakum)
- Flight Cairo–Luxor
- about 1 hour
- Sleeper train
- about 10–11 hours

None of the platform packages sail from Cairo. For that you need a specialist long-cruise departure — see below — and about two weeks.
Is there a Cairo to Luxor cruise?
Yes — but it is a specialist two-week voyage, not something you pick up on a booking platform. The one ship that runs the full route regularly is the Mövenpick MS Darakum, a 52-cabin vessel with a shallow draft built for the long sailing. Riviera Travel sells it as a 14-night Cairo–Aswan cruise and describes the Darakum as currently the only vessel operating the route on a regular basis.
Its published itinerary for the 4 November 2026 departure gives a sense of the pace:
| Day | Stop |
|---|---|
| 1–3 | Cairo: embark, the pyramids, Sphinx and Saqqara, the Coptic Museum |
| 4–5 | Sailing south |
| 6–7 | Beni Hassan, then Tel el-Amarna |
| 8 | Sailing |
| 9–10 | Abydos, then Dendera |
| 11–12 | Luxor and Karnak |
| 13 | Kom Ombo |
| 14–15 | Aswan, disembark |
Listed departures after that one fall in February, March, April, May, September, October and November 2027. Prices are sold in pounds sterling as fly-cruise packages from the UK and change often, so check the operator for a current figure. A reverse Aswan-to-Cairo version is also sold.
Why the long route almost disappeared
Cruises and organized excursions between Cairo and Luxor were halted during the 1990s insurgency in Middle Egypt. Egypt's tourism ministry announced in 2012 that the route would reopen, and the first public Cairo-to-Aswan sailing in about twenty years left in April 2013. It has stayed a niche ever since: the big fleets shuttle between Luxor and Aswan, and the long sailing is left to one ship and a handful of specialist departures.
What most "Cairo to Luxor cruise" packages really are
Search for the phrase on a booking site and you'll mostly find fly-and-cruise packages: a domestic flight from Cairo, then the standard 3-night Aswan–Luxor cruise or its 4-night southbound twin, and a flight back. That isn't a downside — it fits the best of the river into a long weekend instead of two weeks.
| Option | Days | River time | Price | Sites beyond Luxor–Aswan | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Long cruise on the Darakum | 15 | 14 nights | sold in GBP; check operator | Beni Hassan, Amarna, Abydos, Dendera | Slow travel, specialists |
| Big-line fly-cruise (e.g. Viking) | 12 | 8-day round trip from Luxor | check operator | Dendera, Esna, Abu Simbel | Cruise-line comfort |
| 4-day fly + cruise from Cairo | 4 | 3 nights | from about $1,300 | Abu Simbel, balloon | Short trips |
| 5-day private with flights | 5 | cruise segment | from about $1,072 | Pyramids, Abu Simbel, balloon | Couples, families |
| 8-day Cairo + cruise | 8 | cruise segment | from about $2,077 | Pyramids, Abu Simbel | First Egypt trip |
| DIY: sleeper train + cruise | 4–5 | 3–4 nights | about $110–125 train + cabin | Your choice | Budget, flexible |
Viking's Pharaohs & Pyramids trip is a good example of the cruise-line version: three nights in Cairo, a flight to Luxor and an 8-day round-trip cruise from Luxor that includes Dendera and Abu Simbel. Like the platform packages, it starts in Cairo but the boat starts in Luxor.

Flying vs the sleeper train to your ship
Flying is the quick option. EgyptAir's Cairo–Luxor flight takes about an hour, so an early flight can get you to the ship for a typical 11:00 boarding. Fly into Aswan instead if you want the shorter downstream cruise.
The sleeper train saves a hotel night. Abela runs the overnight trains (they were formerly sold as Watania sleepers): the daily departures leave Cairo at 19:45 and 21:10, reach Luxor at about 06:10 and 07:50, and Aswan about three hours later. A berth in a shared two-person cabin costs about $110–125 per person one-way, and sole use about $150–170. That gives you a full day in Luxor or Aswan before boarding.
Dendera and Abydos without the long cruise
The sites that make the long sailing special are not out of reach. Dendera and Abydos lie north of Luxor and make a long day trip by car — see our Dendera and Abydos guide. Add that to a standard cruise and you've seen most of what the two-week voyage offers south of Middle Egypt, in a fraction of the time. Beni Hassan and Amarna, between Cairo and Luxor, are the sites you genuinely give up.
Questions travellers ask
Can you take a boat from Cairo to Luxor?
Yes, but only on a scheduled long cruise. The Mövenpick MS Darakum runs 14-night Cairo–Aswan sailings, sold in the UK by Riviera Travel, with listed departures in November 2026 and February, March, April, May, September, October and November 2027. There is no public ferry or regular passenger boat between the two cities.
How long does a Nile cruise from Cairo to Luxor take?
On the Darakum's published itinerary, the ship leaves Cairo on day 1 and reaches Luxor on day 11, after stops at Beni Hassan, Tel el-Amarna, Abydos and Dendera and several full days of sailing. It then continues to Aswan, arriving on day 14. Allow about two weeks for the full trip.
Why are Cairo to Luxor cruises so rare?
Cruises on the Middle Egypt stretch were halted during the 1990s insurgency, and the route stayed closed for roughly two decades. The first public Cairo-to-Aswan sailing in about twenty years left in April 2013. Since then, only a handful of ships have run it, and today one vessel operates it regularly.
What is the fastest way from Cairo to a Nile cruise?
Fly. EgyptAir's Cairo–Luxor flights take about an hour in the air. Fly to Aswan to join a 3-night downstream cruise, or to Luxor for the 4-night southbound one, and check the ship's boarding day before booking the flight. Our Cairo to Luxor guide compares flights, trains and buses.
Is the sleeper train a good way to reach a Nile cruise?
It's the classic budget route. The overnight sleeper leaves Cairo in the evening and reaches Luxor at about 06:00–09:00 and Aswan about three hours later. Fares are about $110–125 per person in a shared two-berth cabin. You arrive in time to board a ship the same day. See our train guide.
