Is a balloon and tour combo worth it?

A Luxor balloon and day tour combo makes sense when you have only one day in Luxor and want somebody else to handle the timing. It is rarely the cheaper option. Here is what's on offer, and what the same day costs if you book the flight and the tour separately.

Option Price per person Duration Entry tickets Pickup Best for
Balloon + full day, both banks (Headout) from about $141 full day optional, extra Luxor hotels Lowest combo price (no reviews yet)
Balloon + full-day sights tour (GYG) from about $160 9 h check the listing Luxor hotels Most-reviewed combo
Balloon + both banks, all-inclusive (GYG) from about $175 11 h check the listing Luxor hotels Gentler pace
Balloon + Dendera Temple, private (GYG) from about $410 7 h check the listing Luxor hotels Second visit, private

The maths, honestly

Take the cheapest sunrise flight with transfers (about $63 on Headout) and the most-reviewed shared full-day tour of both banks (about $30 on GetYourGuide). That's about $93 a person, before entry tickets. The combos run from about $141 to $175. So you're paying roughly $48–82 extra for one booking — a single pickup, a guide who meets you off the balloon, and no risk of the tour leaving before you land.

Swap in the most-reviewed flight ($88) and the separate total rises to about $118, so the combo premium falls to $23–57. For a family of four, though, even the low end of that gap is $90 or more — enough for the entry tickets of two people.

Entry tickets are the line that changes the comparison. If a combo includes them and the separate tour does not, add about EGP 1,790 (roughly $36 at about EGP 50 to the dollar) to the separate total for the Valley of the Kings (EGP 750), Karnak (EGP 600) and Hatshepsut's temple (EGP 440). Balloon combos from Hurghada

From the Red Sea, the balloon has to be in the air at sunrise, about 4 hours' drive away. That means leaving the night before. One-day balloon trips from Hurghada start at about $210 and run 18–20 hours; the most-reviewed two-day trips with a Luxor hotel night start at about $215–270.

A one-day balloon trip from Hurghada
  1. Hotel pickup in Hurghada (about 11:00–11:30 p.m. the night before)
  2. Arrive in Luxor after about 4 hours on the road; tea at a local café
  3. Sunrise balloon flight over the West Bank (weather permitting)
  4. Valley of the Kings (three tombs), Hatshepsut's temple and the Colossi of Memnon with an Egyptologist
  5. Lunch at a local restaurant
  6. Felucca sail on the Nile, then Karnak Temple on the East Bank
  7. Start of the drive back; about 4 hours to Hurghada, arriving around 19:00

Times are approximate and follow the published itinerary of one small-group trip; they shift with the sunrise. The real cost is sleep: you fly after a night in a minibus, then walk the tombs in the midday sun.

The two-day version costs barely more. At about $215–270 with a hotel night, it gives you the balloon on a rested morning and the temples without the overnight drive. If you have the time, it's the better buy — our Hurghada day-trip guide covers both formats.

Which should you choose?

  • One day in Luxor, first visit: the most-reviewed combo. The coordination is worth the premium.
  • Two or more days: book the flight and a West Bank tour on different mornings.
  • Coming from Hurghada: the two-day trip, unless you truly can't spare the night.
  • Private, slower day: a standard flight, then a private guide and car — private full days start at about $80 a person.

Questions travellers ask

Is a balloon and day tour combo cheaper than booking separately?

Usually not. The cheapest sunrise flight (about $63) plus the cheapest shared full-day tour (about $30) comes to about $93, against $141–175 for the combos. You're paying $48–82 for coordination — one pickup, and a tour that starts when you land. With the most-reviewed flight ($88) the gap narrows to $23–57.

Are entry tickets included in Luxor balloon combos?

It depends on the listing. Some say "optional tickets", meaning you pay at the gate or add them at booking; "all-inclusive" listings usually fold them in, but check the includes line. Budget about EGP 1,790 (roughly $36) for the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut and Karnak if they're not included.

Can you do a balloon ride and the Valley of the Kings on the same day?

Yes. Balloons land by about 7:00–7:30 a.m. in winter, and the Valley of the Kings opens at 6:00 a.m., so you can be at the tombs before the coach groups arrive. Just make sure your tour's pickup time doesn't clash with your return from the flight.

Can you do a Luxor balloon ride on a day trip from Hurghada?

Yes. Hurghada pickups for balloon day trips are typically around 11:00–11:30 p.m. the night before, followed by about four hours on the road to reach Luxor before sunrise. You're back in Hurghada in the evening, roughly 18–20 hours after pickup. It works, but you'll fly on no sleep.

Is the two-day trip from Hurghada better value?

Often, yes. Two-day trips with a balloon flight and a Luxor hotel night start at about $215–270 — close to the $210–345 one-day balloon trips. For a similar price you sleep before the flight and see the temples at a more humane pace. Our Hurghada balloon guide compares them.
