Luxor quad bike & desert safari — an hour on the desert edge
A Luxor quad bike safari is a short ride — about an hour on the desert edge of the West Bank, usually at sunset, for about $100 per person. It's fun, but pricier and smaller than a Hurghada safari, and ratings vary widely.

Hurghada's desert safaris give you more desert, more riding and dinner for less money. Use your Luxor time for the temples.
Is a quad bike safari in Luxor worth it?
As an add-on, yes; as a reason to come to Luxor, no. A Luxor quad bike safari gives you about an hour on a quad at the desert edge of the West Bank, usually at sunset, with the Theban hills in front and the green strip of the Nile behind. It is a good break after two days of tombs and temples. It is also expensive for what it is — about $100 per person — and much smaller in scale than the desert safaris sold in Hurghada.
All three listings we track are on GetYourGuide, and all three start from about $100. The difference is in the operator and the reviews.

Where do Luxor quad tours actually ride?
On desert tracks, not through the monuments. The West Bank tours cross the river — the most-reviewed one by boat from the East Bank — then drive through the villages and sugar-cane fields to a quad station at the edge of the cultivation. From there you ride on sand and gravel tracks toward the limestone hills, stop for tea, and turn back as the sun sets. One listing names Wadi Ziad as the destination.
The East Bank tour rides in the desert east of the city instead. It has the same price and less scenery, and its reviews are the weakest of the three.
Sunset decides the timing. In December the sun goes down around 5:00 pm, in midsummer after 7:30 pm, so pickups move from mid-afternoon in winter to early evening in summer.
- Hotel pickup on the East Bank, short drive to the river
- Motorboat across the Nile, then a car through the villages
- Safety briefing and a 10-minute test ride at the quad station
- About an hour on the desert tracks, with a tea stop
- Sunset over the hills, then back to the station
- Boat and car back to your hotel
What the ratings really say
The most-reviewed tour (★4.2, 118 reviews) is run by Nice Tours. Reviewers describe a smooth chain of pickup, boat and car, a patient instructor, and a tea stop in the desert; one notes that the whole trip took about three hours door to door. At $100 for an hour of riding, read the most recent reviews before you book. Our Nice Tours review covers the operator.
The West Bank adventure (★4.6, 10 reviews) gets warm comments on the guides, the tea in the desert and some small dune climbs. One reviewer noted that the ride stays fairly close to the starting point — a fair summary of Luxor quads in general.
The East Bank private safari (★2.9, 6 reviews) splits sharply. The positive reviews are older; a 2026 review describes repeated calls during the ride about what the booking covered, attempts to charge extra, and only about half an hour of actual riding. With $100 on the line, choose one of the West Bank options.
Luxor or Hurghada: which desert safari?
If your trip includes the Red Sea, ride there. Hurghada's safaris take place in the open Eastern Desert and are built as half-day packages; Luxor's are a short ride on a narrow strip of desert.
| Luxor quad safari | Hurghada desert safari | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Quad only, about 1 h riding | Quad plus buggy or jeep, camel ride, Bedouin village |
| Total time | 2–3 h with transfers | up to about 7 h |
| Food | Tea or water | Barbecue dinner and a show on many packages |
| Price | from about $100 per person | roughly $20–70, depending on the seller |
| Extra fees | None listed | Safari admission fee, about €7, often paid locally |
| Scenery | Fields, villages, Theban hills at sunset | Open desert and mountains |
Coming from Hurghada for the temples? Our Luxor from Hurghada guide compares day trips and two-day trips — and a sunrise balloon flight is Luxor's better "adventure" for the money.
Safety: what to check before you ride
- Helmet. None of the three Luxor listings mentions one in its inclusions. Ask before booking and refuse to ride without one.
- Age and license. Rules vary. Some Hurghada operators set 16 as the minimum age to drive; the Luxor listings don't state an age or a license requirement. Ask.
- Heat. Ride in the late afternoon, carry water, and avoid summer trips that start before about 5 pm.
- Documents. The Sun Pyramids Tours listings ask for a copy of your passport up to two days before the tour.
- Insurance. Some travel policies exclude quad biking. Check the wording before you ride.
- The landscape. Stay on the guide's track. Operators themselves point out that the desert and the monuments nearby are easily damaged.

Questions travellers ask
How much is a quad bike safari in Luxor?
The three listings we track on GetYourGuide all start from about $100 per person, for roughly an hour of riding within a two- to three-hour trip including hotel pickup and, on the West Bank, a boat across the Nile. That is notably more than a Hurghada desert safari, which usually bundles more riding and dinner.
Where do quad bike tours go in Luxor?
Most ride on the West Bank, crossing the farmland and villages to the desert edge below the Theban hills, timed for sunset. One listing names Wadi Ziad. There is also an East Bank option. The riding is on desert tracks; any monuments you pass are seen from the car on the way.
Do you need a license to ride a quad in Luxor?
It depends on the operator. Some Hurghada safari operators set a minimum age of 16 to drive; the Luxor listings we checked state no age or license rule at all. Ask before booking, and expect younger children to ride as passengers or not at all.
Is quad biking in Luxor safe?
It is as safe as the operator and your own riding. Insist on a helmet — none of the three listings includes one in its stated inclusions — and goggles or a scarf for the dust. Keep to the guide's track, avoid midday heat, and check that your travel insurance covers quad biking — some policies exclude it.
Is a Luxor desert safari like the Hurghada safaris?
No. Hurghada safaris are half-day packages in the open Eastern Desert — quad, buggy or jeep, a camel ride, a Bedouin village and dinner with a show, up to about seven hours. Luxor's version is a short sunset ride on the strip of desert between the fields and the hills, with tea and a view.
What should I wear for a quad ride in Luxor?
Closed shoes, long light trousers and sunglasses. The most-reviewed operator hands out a scarf to wrap around your face against the dust. Bring water, and a light layer in winter — once the sun drops behind the hills, December evenings cool quickly.
